Why they did not reading 忌 as "i-mu"?

"i-mu" is verb.(忌む、忌ム)
"i-mi" is noun.(忌み、忌ミ)

Probably because，that way was good convenience on account of the sentence representation.

In this case.
Today, 忌 seems reading as "imi" in most cases.

忌明け(imi-a-ke)　-The end of the mourning period and certain period of time after giving birth of mother.

忌数(imi-kazu) -Numbers that should be avoided.
